Background. Uterine artery embolization (UAE) as a treatment for uterine fibroids confers a risk of various complications, among which there is pulmonary embolism (PE).
Case report. A 36-year-old female patient who had no cardiovascular disease at the time of admission underwent UAE for uterine fibroids. A day after the procedure, there was dyspnea, hypotension, and then complete cessation of cardiac activity in the patient. After resuscitation measures, heart rate and blood pressure recovered, PE was diagnosed, and stepwise systemic intravenous thrombolysis (urokinase, unfractionated heparin) was performed. The patient’s condition improved after treatment.
Conclusion. PE is a common and extremely menacing complication of UAE. To prevent this, prior to the procedure, patients should be thoroughly examined for latent thrombosis and, if the latter was present, undergo appropriate therapeutic measures.
